ON THE PORCH by BZ Niditch

Combing out
on these day’s
nightmares with
headlines of war,
deaths of children
with anonymous
elusive answers
to a puzzled pastime
of silent violation
in our century
known to echo
on dawns’ like this
when snow crystals
on the rocking chair
portend an apocalypse
a multitude
of unguarded thoughts
spills like tea
in nana’s glass
from the old samovar
at a kiosk
where she met
a sober grandfather
searching for a wife
(or so the lore
and he came here
always on the porch
and proposed
a better fate.
