What the Hey? by Ivan Jenson

For crying out loud
what do you get
but a neighbor
pounding on your thin walls
yelling, “for Christ’s sake
keep it down!”
and for speaking your mind
all you get is a therapist
saying, “thanks for sharing.”
For painting a masterpiece
at most they give you a spot
at the Louvre where
the security guard
tells tourists:
“No picture taking”
and for love making
all you get is
maybe a baby
who will think
the very music
to your ears
is out-dated
and so
living our life to
the fullest
is the empty
joke we play
on the
thankless oxygen
masked prank
of breathing life
into
everything
