Prognosticating by Annmarie Lockhart

A lump on the hip–
smaller than a grape,
bigger than a raisin–
and google shows
me fibrosarcoma,
vaccine related
(particularly rabies
and feline leukemia),
sprouting from an
old injection site
and tendriling into
feline-flexible muscle.
There is only surgery
without clean margins,
chemo, radiation,
stretching things out
to maybe one extra
year. But that’s
not living. It might
just be a cyst after
all. I never took
him for yearly shots
anyway, what with
him being an indoor
adventurer. Yes.
A cyst. And it will
shrink. And he’ll
be fine. But I keep
thinking about all the
times I’ve laughed
about how very
strange it is
that all my cats
die at thirteen.
