Happenstance, or Why rushing to work on a Monday morning when you’re half-awake is not wise by Carolyn Martin

If I had lingered for a second cup
or read my horoscope
or emptied out the sink
of last night’s saucy recipe,
my Honda Fit would have missed
the lusty squirrel that dodged
the SUV whose windshield caught
the red-tailed hawk that failed
to calibrate her lift from asphalt
slick with rabbit-splat the Kia
smeared in puddling rain
on our sleepy street.
