Some Blues – James Babbs

when she came over and
touched me on the arm
I knew exactly who she was
even though it had been years
since the last time I’d seen her
I told her
she looked really good and
it had been so long
she said yeah
I know
I guess time flies
when you’re having fun
I said well
it really doesn’t matter
time keeps on going
whether you’re having fun or not
there was a makeshift stage
at the other end of the bar and
a local band was up there
trying to play some blues
the music wound around us and
we had to lean close together
in order to hear ourselves talk
I asked her
what she was doing here and
she said oh
just visiting some friends
she told me
she was living with someone and
her little boy had just turned two
I asked her
if she was still out east and
she said yeah
things were going pretty good
what about you
she asked me
are you still writing
I said oh yeah
still trying to get famous and
I’m glad it made her laugh
well she finally said
it was good seeing you
I think we’re going to go
get something to eat
I said okay and
she told me
I was welcome to come along
but I told her no
I was going to stay here and
listen to the band
she gave me a hug
then she kissed me on the cheek
nice seeing you again
she said
I told her yeah
you too and
the music suddenly ended
there was a smattering of applause
I watched her leave
while the voice came over the speakers
thanks for coming out to see us
it said
we’ll be right back
after we take a short break
